Room to Grow

The addition meets the existing home at both the front and back of the garage, with the new floor levelled at both points so the upper level reads as one continuous story, built without the need for a new foundation. Downstairs, the cooktop was recentered under an enlarged window on the kitchen’s window wall, paired with a retractable downdraft ventilation system routed through the basement to clear the low space beneath the deck, preserving the view when it isn’t in use. An unused section of wall became a dedicated coffee bar, extending the kitchen’s function without extending its footprint, and the existing opening between the kitchen and dining room was fitted with pocket doors, letting the two rooms open up together or close off as needed.

Oak-toned lower cabinetry paired with white uppers establishes a warm, two-tone kitchen palette, with white quartz counters and backsplash, veined in gold and grey, tying the surfaces together. Black fluted-glass pocket doors introduce contrast between the kitchen, dining room, and mudroom, echoed in the coffee bar’s fixtures and the black pendant lighting above the dining table. A built-in in the dining room continues the kitchen’s material language through the same black and oak tones, topped in an off-white composite surface with brown veining and fitted out with dedicated storage for dishware and household items. Existing kitchen hardware was salvaged and reused rather than replaced, and champagne bronze fixtures repeat at both the kitchen sink and the coffee bar, carrying one material story from the cooking zone through the rest of the main floor.
