Among the Trees

Kitchen, dining, and living once shared one undefined open area with no real separation between them. The kitchen absorbed the original dining room’s footprint, the dining room moved into the old living room, and the living room shifted into a new addition, letting each space grow in sequence without extending the home’s footprint. A three-way gas fireplace that once divided the kitchen from the living room came down, opening a clear sightline between both spaces, and the original decorative peninsula, which offered little usable prep space, was replaced with a large island with seating, built for two people cooking at once with clear circulation on every side. A new window, a resized window, and a new patio door in a widened opening bring natural light and the property’s mature tree canopy into the kitchen from multiple directions.

Deep sage green cabinetry lines the perimeter, paired with a lighter tone above the range and a warm cherry wood island base for a layered, nature-forward palette. Light quartz, veined with grey and gold, runs continuously across the countertops, the full-height backsplash, and the windowsill for one unbroken surface, and champagne bronze hardware repeats throughout the cabinetry, echoed by brass pendant lighting above the island. A concealed appliance garage with pocket doors keeps small appliances out of sight, a base cabinet toe kick houses the robot vacuum’s dock, and a recessed opening in the lower cabinetry gives the family’s pets a dedicated feeding spot. The original oak hardwood was refinished and patched to match new flooring in the addition, reading as one continuous surface across old and new construction.
