Before and After: A Kitchen Transformation

Posted April 29, 2019

There’s a real sense of satisfaction in being able to take a space and update it so effectively that it is unidentifiable from what it was to start. Such was the case with a recent kitchen transformation that stayed in the same location, but benefited immensely from a small bump-out.

The existing kitchen already had a small bump-out, but it failed to maximize function. Our solution was to extend the footprint out and back a bit to create a more open kitchen space. The room also required a full gut to update dated and worn materials, fixtures and finishes.

The new Shaker-style cabinets and counters were laid out on the side and back of the wall, with a big island in the middle. A nook in between the two doorways into the room was created to fit the homeowners’ antique kitchen storage unit. (Early 20th-century folks used this to store staples such as onions and potatoes and it has a large pull-out cutting board.)

The homeowners love the white Kitchen Aid fridge they found and decided to keep the kitchen bright with all-white appliances, white cabinets and white backsplash.

The clients chose most of the selections for this project themselves and knew the 12×24 porcelain, light grey vein floor tile was a must-have when they saw it. They also loved the idea of the island being a different colour and decided on a navy blue with a butcher block top.

The back of the glass cabinets and coffee area is the same navy blue as the island, adding both definition and continuity. It was important for the clients to have a place to showcase dishes that have been in their family for years and this was the perfect spot.

Open shelving nearby hosts a collection of tea pots and sugar/cream/milk dispensers collected over many years. And the counter below the glass cabinets acts as a handy coffee station.

Stainless steel is the fixture accent with a farmhouse sink, hood vent, island lights, and matching faucet and cabinet hardware.

The result is a clean, fresh space that is both modern and timeless, highly functional and a room to gravitate to for family and friends.
