If this award-winning project looks familiar, it’s with good reason. We’ve used this home as our inspiration project in our just-released Amsted TV series, or ATV. And if those tantalising glimpses have left you wanting to see more, we’re sharing it in greater detail as a great example of why it works.
This beautiful 1950s Island Park home was renovated from top to bottom, replacing a dated existing addition with a new 1,200-square-foot, two-storey addition, and completing a full interior redesign. Located on one of the oldest and most beautiful streets in Ottawa, when the homeowners inherited the house, they knew a renovation was needed not just to provide space for their growing family, but also to return the house to the splendour deserved of the area.
Extra care was taken to maintain the original charm of the home and architectural details common in the neighbourhood. And the space gained in the addition allowed for a complete interior redesign.
An open-concept kitchen, breakfast area and family room fill the new space, featuring custom millwork, stone countertops, hardwood flooring and gas fireplace. The existing space was transformed into an expanded formal dining room and living room to welcome extended family gatherings. A combination foyer and mudroom were also created between the front and garage entrances and designed for flexibility in use.
The second-floor addition features a new master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in closet to provide a private oasis for the parents. The existing second floor became home to a dedicated laundry room, two updated bathrooms, and three large bedrooms, providing the children with a space all their own.
With every detail in this impressive renovation thoughtfully considered, the final result is a timeless, comfortable family home that can be enjoyed for multiple generations to come. The project won an Ontario Home Builders’ Association award and was a finalist in the Canadian Home Builders’ Association Housing Excellence Awards.
