Meet the Finalist: Modern and Timeless in a Black-And-White Kitchen

Posted September 3, 2019

A black-and-white kitchen is a classic look that’s also timeless, elegant and definitely on trend. In this Barrhaven main-floor renovation, traditional styling with a modern twist has helped this kitchen become a finalist in the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association Housing Design Awards this fall!

Classic white Shaker cabinets along the perimeter provide a crisp esthetic that doesn’t overpower the space while offering plenty of handy storage. The island becomes a focus with its contrasting black base, white granite counter highlighting the black and grey veining, and a trio of stylish black pendants.

This project was all about opening up the space for better integration of the kitchen to both the family room and the dining room, as well as creating a highly efficient room easy to work in, comfortable to gather in and full of storage options.

Pot drawers on either side of the range as well as deep drawers at the island provide easy access while a large floor-to-ceiling pantry was added to make use of a previously empty space.

The homeowners wanted a hood fan that was integrated with the cabinets. This was accomplished by taking space from a cabinet and unused ceiling space. Now the custom hood fan enclosure and crown molding add that finishing touch to an elevated look.

A wall separating the kitchen and dining room was removed to allow for more cabinets, two wine racks, and a larger counter space to connect the two areas and provide space that’s convenient for entertaining. The resulting peninsula makes entertaining easier and features the added detail of cabinets with etched glass and wine racks to complement the dining room.

At the same time, the kitchen is now open to the sitting area with fireplace to allow more room for family to gather and also keep cosy in winter while making meals.

Although there were many changes to this home, great effort was made to keep the new spaces consistent with the old, such as matching the hardwood in the kitchen with the rest of the home. All of that makes for a seamless renovation that updates without disconnecting.
