Small home design changes that add up to a big impact

January 19, 2017

Renovating an existing home can make it feel new and exciting once again. While some renovations may be extensive, making small updates to individual rooms can also create a lasting impression on a limited budget.

Trim

Updated moulding is a surprisingly affordable and effective tip for adding elegance to a room. Crown moulding, including varieties like baseboards and chair rails, adds a richness to any room, bringing the walls and ceiling together. Choose MDF instead of wood in low moisture areas to save on materials, and combine multiple styles or pieces to cut costs. When painted the same colour they give the look of a single, high-quality moulding. Picture framing is another eye-catching, affordable option that involves attaching narrow strips of moulding to walls to create a paneled appearance.

Hardware

Inject a breath of fresh air into a kitchen or bathroom with new hardware on the drawers, cupboards, closets, and cabinets. While you may instinctively head to the big box store to choose them, instead try scouring flea markets, estate sales, and antique shops to find eclectic and high-quality pieces that will add a touch of charm to each room.

Remember, keep it fun! Renovations can be an adventure when homeowners look for unexpected ways to infuse their personal sense of style into their home.
