Customized solutions for organized living on CTV News at Noon

April 13, 2017

When Spring arrives, it seems natural to talk about organizing and storage solutions. In his latest appearance on CTV News at Noon with Leanne Cusack, Amsted President Steve Barkhouse uses a recent renovation to highlight great space-saving ideas.

The kitchen and main bathroom are two areas where it’s easy for clutter to get out of control. In the case of this project, an earlier Amsted renovation that worked well for the previous homeowners did not fit the lifestyle and design aesthetic of the new owners, although they appreciated the craftsmanship.

Claiming a much smaller footprint for the kitchen by removing an unneeded island and turning it into a galley style, created much-needed space for a dining table and living room use. The new kitchen features a more modern European look, with blond wood cabinetry punctuated by yellow lacquer accents for a fresh, sunny feel.

But while the space is smaller, it packs an organizational punch, featuring clever storage solutions such as sheet pan and spice cabinets tucked beside the fridge, appliance storage and a full-height pantry that opens on two sides and conveniently hides kitchen clutter from the adjacent room.

Similarly, upstairs in the bathroom, an outdated former Jack-and-Jill (a bathroom accessed by two bedrooms) has become a sleek ensuite that incorporates a dressing area and his and hers closet space with a built-in chest of drawers, full-height wardrobes, pullout drawers and more.

It’s a project that shows you don’t need more space to make it efficient and maximize its storage potential.
